Examine events between 1685 which provide the background and reasons for the ’45 Rising. What happened when Charles Edward landed in Scotland in July 1745 and called for the Clans to gather? How did the Hanoverian Government respond?
The Jacobite army grew and advanced to Edinburgh. The first major battle between forces took place at Prestonpans.
The Jacobites enjoyed a period in Edinburgh. Why did they decide to advance into England and what success did they meet as they travelled through Northern England?
Why did the Jacobites decide to turn away from Derby and not to advance on London? By Christmas they were back in Scotland and Government forces were not far behind them.
The army of Charles Edward Stuart was centred around Stirling and that of the Government forces around Edinburgh. They would meet for their second major confrontation at Falkirk. Would the result be the same as at Prestonpans?
Despite the success at Falkirk, the Jacobites continue to move North closely followed by a growing Government army now under the command of the Duke of Cumberland. By the end of March the Jacobites were mainly near Inverness and Government forces centred on Aberdeen.
The armies of Charles Edward Stuart and the Duke of Cumberland finally meet at Culloden. Would the outcome be the same as the two previous battles? What if the night march to Nairn by Jacobite forces had been successful or had not been attempted? Why did the battle take place on this field and what had been learnt from previous encounters?
What were the actions on and around the battlefield immediately after April 16th? What actions did the Government take to try to ensure that the Jacobite story would end in 1746? And what happened to Charles Edward Stuart in the years and months following Culloden?
